As an avid hiker, my passion for exploring new trails led me to the Peaks of the Balkans, a spectacular route through Albania, Montenegro, and Kosovo. Preparing for this 17-day journey meant ensuring I had all the necessary gear, accommodations, and, importantly, permits sorted. The Peaks of the Balkans trail requires cross-border permits, which I learned would be crucial for a smooth hike.
The cross-border permits were one of the first logistical challenges I encountered. For a fee of 45 Euros for two people, these permits were essential for crossing the borders seamlessly. Ensuring I had these permits in hand before setting off saved me from potential headaches at the borders. The process was straightforward, but it required some advance planning and coordination.
Upon arriving in Shkoder, the gateway to the Peaks of the Balkans, I was filled with anticipation. The town had a welcoming vibe, and I quickly sorted out my remaining logistics, including finding a secure place to store my excess luggage. Each step revealed stunning vistas and a variety of wildflowers. The Montenegro section provided some of the most breathtaking views, while Kosovo’s open terrain offered a unique contrast.
Balancing between camping under the stars and staying in cozy guest houses added to the adventure. Along the way, I encountered numerous picturesque villages and welcoming locals. It was essential to have my valuables stored securely, especially when passing through Theth, Valbone, and Lepushe.
Every day on the trail brought new challenges and triumphs. From steep ascents to serene mountain lakes, the journey was filled with memorable moments. The camaraderie with fellow hikers and the warm hospitality of the locals enriched the experience even further.
After 17 days of hiking, I made my way back to Shkoder, feeling accomplished and exhilarated. Retrieving my luggage from the storage facility was as effortless as the drop-off. It was reassuring to know that my belongings had been safe and secure throughout my adventure.
Reflecting on the entire journey, I realized how crucial proper preparation and logistics were.
