Do You Need Travel Insurance for Albania?
Travel insurance is not a legal entry requirement for most visitors to Albania, but if you are hiking it is one of the most important things you can buy. Northern Albania's best routes — the Theth–Valbona pass, the Peaks of the Balkans and the Accursed Mountains (Bjeshkët e Namuna) — run through remote valleys with patchy mobile signal, no road access for hours and weather that can close in fast.
Mountain rescue in Albania is not free, hospitals in the north are basic, and serious injuries usually mean a transfer to Shkodër or Tirana — or a flight home. We run a luggage storage and hiking basecamp in Shkodër and talk to hundreds of hikers every season; the ones who get into trouble are rarely unprepared on gear, but very often on insurance.
Why Standard Travel Insurance Often Isn't Enough for Hiking in Albania
Many travellers assume their existing policy or credit-card cover is enough. On the Albanian trails, these are the gaps we see most often:
- No search & rescue cover. Many budget policies pay for hospital treatment but not for the team or helicopter that gets you off the mountain.
- Hiking treated as a "hazardous activity". Multi-day trekking in remote areas is often excluded or needs a paid add-on.
- Altitude limits. Some policies stop at 2,000 m or less — the Peaks of the Balkans climbs above 2,000 m on several stages.
- Missing countries. The Peaks of the Balkans crosses into Kosovo and Montenegro; Kosovo in particular is excluded by some policies.

A 192 km loop over 8–12 days, crossing three borders and passes above 2,000 m. You need a policy that covers all three countries and mountain rescue in each. Theth to Valbona (and Valbona to Theth)
