Adventure Insurance FAQ: Your Questions Answered

About Adventure Insurance

Adventure Insurance is a Store & Go Shkoder product designed specifically for hikers, trekkers, and adventurers exploring the Albanian Alps and surrounding Balkan mountains. The underlying insurance cover is underwritten by SIGAL Insurance Group.

This FAQ covers the most common questions we receive from travellers planning treks on the Peaks of the Balkans, Valbona-Theth trail, and Koman Lake routes.

General Questions

Who underwrites Adventure Insurance?

Adventure Insurance is a Store & Go Shkoder product. The underlying insurance cover is underwritten by SIGAL Insurance Group, the largest non-life insurer in Albania. SIGAL is part of the UNIQA Group and operates across the Western Balkans.

Which countries are covered?

A standard policy covers Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro — the three countries on the Peaks of the Balkans route. Custom country combinations are available in the quote builder for tailored trips.

Is there an age limit?

No. There is no age limit to qualify for coverage. Travellers of all ages can purchase Adventure Insurance.

What activities are covered?

The following activities are explicitly covered:

  • ✅ Hiking / trekking (no altitude limit)
  • ✅ Boat / ferry travel (including Koman Lake)
  • ✅ Cycling (road and recreational)
  • ✅ Rafting / kayaking

Additional activities may be confirmed on request through our WhatsApp or email channels.

Coverage Questions

What is the difference between Essential, Adventure, and Adventure+?

Essential is a basic medical-only policy (up to €10,000). It does not include Search & Rescue, Emergency Evacuation, or Medical Repatriation. It is designed for low-risk day trips and ferry travel.

Adventure and Adventure+ share the same underlying insurance policy with full coverage including Search & Rescue (€10,000), Medical Evacuation (€30,000), and all additional benefits. The difference is the service level — Adventure+ includes an enhanced service package with faster response coordination.

What is NOT covered by the Essential tier?

Essential does not include:

  • Mountain Search & Rescue
  • Emergency Evacuation / Medical Repatriation
  • Repatriation of Mortal Remains
  • Accidental Death & Permanent Disability
  • Trip Curtailment
  • Baggage Loss / Delay

We do not recommend Essential for the Peaks of the Balkans or Valbona-Theth crossing. Choose Adventure or Adventure+ for mountain treks.

Is the Koman Lake ferry covered?

Yes. Boat and ferry travel is an explicitly covered activity under Adventure and Adventure+ policies. This includes the Berisha Ferry, Alpine Ferry, and other commercial operators on the Koman-Fierze route.

Does the insurance cover via ferrata or rock climbing?

Via ferrata and rock climbing are not currently listed as covered activities. Contact us if you need coverage for additional activities — we may be able to confirm them with SIGAL.

Is COVID-19 covered?

Yes. Medical treatment for COVID-19 during your insured trip is covered under the emergency medical benefit, the same as any other illness requiring treatment.

Buying & Policy Questions

How long are the policy periods?

Policies are available in 7-day, 15-day, and 30-day periods. The quote builder automatically maps your travel dates to the nearest policy period.

Can I buy insurance for just one person?

Yes. You can insure 1–6 adults and 0–4 children on a single policy.

When should I buy the insurance?

Before your trip starts. Ideally, purchase at least 48 hours before your departure to ensure policy documents are issued and delivered. Last-minute purchases are possible but subject to processing time.

How do I receive my policy documents?

Policy documents are delivered digitally (PDF) via email or WhatsApp. We recommend saving them offline on your phone for access on the trail where mobile signal may be unavailable.

Can I cancel my policy and get a refund?

Cancellation terms are detailed in your policy documents issued by SIGAL. Contact us before your policy start date if you need to make changes.

Claims Questions

What happens if I need to make a claim?

  1. In an emergency: Call the 24/7 emergency assistance number on your policy. They will coordinate rescue, hospital treatment, and claims processing.
  2. After your trip: For non-emergency claims (baggage loss, trip curtailment), contact us with supporting documentation (receipts, medical reports, police reports if applicable).

What documentation do I need for a claim?

  • Medical reports and hospital invoices
  • Rescue operation receipts (if applicable)
  • Police report (for theft or loss)
  • Proof of expenses (for baggage delay essential purchases)
  • Your policy number and travel dates
