But is your insurance actually valid while you are on the water?
The Insurance Gap Most Travellers Miss
Standard travel insurance policies are designed around flights, hotels, and taxis. When it comes to boat travel on inland waterways, many policies have specific exclusions or conditions:
Common Exclusions for Boat Travel
- "Water sports and activities" — some policies classify any non-commercial boat travel as a water sport
- "Local transport not operated by a licensed carrier" — the definition of "licensed carrier" varies by country and insurer
- "Inland waterway vessels" — some policies only cover ocean-going ferries and cruise ships

The Koman Ferry Specifically
The Koman-Fierze route is operated by established companies like Berisha Ferry and Alpine Ferry Koman. These are licensed commercial operators. However, many travellers also book:
- Private speedboat transfers to the Shala River
- Small passenger boats for day trips on Koman Lake
- Return boats from Fierze on smaller, informal vessels
The smaller the vessel and the less formal the operator, the more likely your standard travel insurance will find a reason to deny a claim.

The Koman Lake Route: Key Risks
While the ferry crossing is generally safe, there are specific risks to be aware of:
Weather
Koman Lake sits in a deep canyon. Weather can change rapidly, and wind funnels through the narrow passages. Rough water conditions occasionally cause delays or cancellations.
Access
The road from Shkodër to the Koman dam (Fierzë side) is a winding mountain road that takes ~2 hours by minibus. If the ferry is delayed or cancelled, you may be stranded at the dam with no accommodation options.
Medical Access
During the 3-hour crossing, you are hours from any hospital. The nearest medical facility to the Koman dam is Shkodër Regional Hospital (2 hours by road). From Fierze, the nearest is in Bajzë or Pukë (1–2 hours).
Combined Risk: Ferry + Hike
Most travellers taking the Koman Ferry are continuing to the Valbona-Theth hike. This means your insurance needs to cover both the water portion and the mountain trekking portion. A policy that covers ferries but excludes hiking above 1,500m is useless for the typical itinerary.
