Hidden deep within the dramatic rock formations of the Accursed Mountains lies the Shala River (Lumi i Shalës). In recent years, this secluded paradise has gone viral on social media. Often dubbed the "Thailand of Albania" or the "Albanian Maldives," the Shala River is famous for its crystal-clear, emerald-blue waters, towering limestone cliffs, and tranquil pebble beaches.

If you are basing yourself in northern Albania, a Shala River Tour is an absolute must-do. In this guide, we break down how to get there, what to expect, what to pack, and how to manage your luggage logistics so you can enjoy your adventure completely bag-free.

What is the Shala River?

The Shala River originates high in the Albanian Alps near Theth and flows down into the northern end of Koman Lake. The most famous section of the river is a narrow, shallow valley surrounded by sheer cliffs. Because there are no roads leading to this area, it is only accessible by boat.

Historically isolated, the valley has now become a popular destination for day trips and overnight stays, offering activities like swimming, kayaking, hiking, and zip-lining, or simply relaxing at a riverside guesthouse.

How to Get to Shala River from Shkoder or Koman

To reach the Shala River, you must first travel to the Koman Dam (where all boat tours depart).

Step 1: Shkoder to Koman Dam (Minibus)

Most travellers choose to start in Shkoder, the main hub for northern Albanian tourism.

  • Minibus Departure: Shuttles leave Shkoder around 06:30 AM.
  • Travel Time: The drive to Koman takes about 2 hours along a bumpy, winding mountain road.
  • Arrival: You will arrive at the Koman Dam around 08:30 AM, just in time for the boat departures.

Step 2: Koman Dam to Shala River (Boat Tour)

  • Boat Departure: Tour boats leave Koman Dam between 09:30 AM and 10:00 AM.
  • The Journey: You will board a traditional wooden longboat or a small passenger boat. The ride takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, first traversing Koman Lake before branching off into the shallow, winding waters of the Shala River.
  • Return Journey: Boats depart Shala River at 15:00 (3:00 PM), returning you to Koman Dam by 16:30. From there, minibuses are waiting to drive you back to Shkoder (arriving around 18:30).

[!TIP] You can book a complete day-trip package that includes the return minibus from Shkoder, the return boat tour, and lunch. Many tourists combine a Shala River Tour with their transit on the Koman Ferry when heading towards Valbona.

What to Pack for the Shala River Tour

Since the river is deep in the mountains, you should pack smart:

  • Swimwear & Towel: The water is glacier-fed and very cold (around 10–12°C even in summer), but incredibly refreshing on a hot July or August day!
  • Water Shoes: The riverbed is covered in smooth, slippery pebbles. Walking into the water is much easier with rubber water shoes.
  • Cash (LEK): There are no ATMs or card readers at the Shala River. You must carry enough Albanian Lek for food, drinks, kayak rentals, and souvenirs.
  • Dry Bag: Splash water on the boats is common. A small dry bag will keep your phone, camera, and dry clothes safe.

Luggage Logistics: Don't Bring Suitcases on the Boat!

The boats that travel up the Shala River are small, shallow-draft passenger vessels. There is no room for large suitcases, duffel bags, or heavy travel backpacks. Additionally, drag-along suitcases are completely useless on the sandy pebble beaches of the river.
